Roof Insulation

The roofing system atop your house protects your home from outside factors, such as harsh weather.

However, the roof alone does not have the power to protect you from factors such as high and low temperatures without proper insulation. Just as having a well-maintained, durable roof is essential, you must have a well-working and effective insulation system.

To insulate your roof correctly, you must consider several factors, including the type of your roof and whether you wish to use the loft space.

Types of Roof Insulation

Generally, roof insulation is divided into two more significant categories, depending on your roof type.

For sloped roofs, cold and warm loft insulation is usually installed.

The cold loft is insulation installed above the top ceiling of your house, which means you will insulate your house. Still, the loft space will remain unsold and be the same temperature as outside – warm in the summer and cold in the winter.

The cold loft is generally much cheaper than the warm loft, and you could do it yourself. It is also noteworthy that this is the only grant-funded insulation option.

A warm loft is a type of insulation installed directly under your roof. You can use the loft as a storage or living space – the insulation material will regulate the temperature there. This type is more complicated to install and more expensive. However, if you feel you're up to the job and wouldn't want to pay an installer, this can be a DIY project. The critical thing to know about this type is that ventilation must be installed directly beneath the tiles to prevent excessive moisture.

Several options are available for flat roofs as well

A warm roof is a type of insulation installed above the roof deck. On the other hand, a cold roof is installed below the roof deck, leaving space for ventilation. Unlike warm and cold roofs, whose insulation is below the weather membrane, the inverted roof solution is installed above it.

Why Should You Invest in Insulating Your Roof

Roof insulation plays a vital role in keeping your house warm in the winter and cooler in the summer. However, there is a much more critical aspect to it as well. As a consequence of regulating your home's temperature during winter and summer, insulation also helps your wallet.

With proper insulation, you can save up to 50% on heating and electricity bills. Examining your roof and inspecting it by a professional to see what insulation is best for you is essential. Also, you will have a budget – there are cheaper and more expensive options.
