Construction Industry Organizations

Industry Organizations Category

Construction trade associations and standards-generating organizations are both regulatory bodies and valuable sources of information.

Due to the large amount of information that may be required within the construction industries, construction managers and contractors will often refer to technical information and reference standards included in publications by the various organizations representing or regulating the industry.

Although these organizations are often regulatory in nature, they are also invaluable sources of technical information, literature, and instructional materials.

Documentation provided by these organizations can be categorized as reference standards and, rather than repeating all of the necessary information on drawings or specifications, construction professionals may utilize a system of referencing these standards, often using acronyms or abbreviations to represent the full names of the organizations involved. For example, the American Concrete Pipe Association may be referenced as ACPA, while the acronym for the Associated General Contractors of America is AGC, and the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association is KCMA.

Other non-profit organizations or agencies have been established for the purpose of establishing and developing standards, codes, and specifications. These included, but are not limited to, the American Consulting Engineers Council (ACEC), Building Officials and Code Administration, Inc. (BOCA), Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), International Code Council (ICC), National Fire Protection Association (NFiPA), and Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI).
